Throughout this series, we’ve explored the layers that give Karta its strength, comfort, stability, and visual authenticity. From cork and wood fibre to recycled leather and high-definition print, every material has been carefully selected to shape a flooring system designed around circular thinking and contemporary performance.
Now, we reach the final layer.

Patented Protection
The finished surface is where every part of the floor comes together. It’s what people walk on, experience, and interact with every day. It determines how light moves, how natural a floor feels underfoot, and how well it withstands the realities of busy interiors.
For Karta, this also means preserving the authenticity of the original timber our floors were inspired by.

All-Natural, Naturally
We don’t mean to brag, but we know our stuff when it comes to 100% natural materials.
Many resilient floors rely on thick, highly reflective finishes that create a uniform appearance across the surface. While these coatings offer protection, they often move further away from the qualities that make natural materials so appealing in the first place.
Real wood behaves differently. It absorbs light, highlights real texture and grain patterns, and no matter how long a wood floor is installed, it still retains that evidence of a living material.

A Different Kind of Surface
One of the key materials within Karta Plated® is corundum, a naturally occurring mineral form of aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) renowned for its exceptional hardness and durability. Ranking just below diamond on the Mohs hardness scale, corundum has long been used within high-performance industrial applications where abrasion resistance and surface protection are essential.
Within Karta floors, corundum strengthens the protective top layer without compromising the natural appearance of the timber design beneath. This allows Karta Plated® to achieve exceptional AC5-rated wear resistance suitable for heavy commercial use, while retaining the ultra matt finish and tactile realism that define the collection.
The material in our finish provides long-term protection through intelligent material performance. Rather than relying on thick plastic-heavy coatings to achieve durability, Karta uses mineral-enhanced surface technology to preserve the integrity, texture, and visual depth of every floor.
A Truly Natural Finish
One of the defining qualities of Karta Plated® is its ultra matt finish. Rather than creating a glossy, plastic-like sheen, the surface diffuses light naturally, allowing the depth and realism of the timber scans beneath to remain visible and giving the effect of natural, unfinished or hand-polished wood.
This subtle finish works hand in hand with Karta’s high-definition print technology. Knots, medullary rays, saw marks, and tonal variation retain their visual depth because the top layer doesn’t overpower them with excessive shine.

We Do The Hard Work For You
Underfoot, Karta Plated® delivers a soft, warm haptic that complements the cork-backed construction beneath. Combined with its lightly textured surface and enhanced slip resistance, it creates a flooring experience designed around how spaces are actually used, from hospitality environments and workplaces to kitchens, retail settings, and contemporary homes.
Our floors were also constructed for the exact demands of commercial flooring maintenance – smooth boards, bevel-free edges, and square shoulder click-system joins mean no trapped dirt or debris, making day to day cleaning and upkeep easy.

Delivering on Demands
For design-led interiors, detail is everything. A floor sets the tone of a room, and even small imperfections or obvious repeats can undermine an otherwise considered scheme.
Karta’s attention to visual variety gives it a noticeable edge in these environments. Designing a minimalist loft apartment, a retail showroom, or a hospitality space? Karta delivers the character and variation of natural timber with the performance advantages of engineered flooring.
Because the design layer is digitally created, we can also offer boards at larger scales without the constraints of natural wood supply. This flexibility opens new design possibilities, allowing specifiers to use wide planks or panels in ways that would be difficult or out-of-budget with real timber.

Responsible Resilience
Durability matters, particularly in spaces with constant footfall, movement, furniture traffic, and changing environmental conditions.
Karta Plated® has been engineered to withstand these pressures through a combination of abrasion resistance, impact resistance, scratch resistance, moisture resistance, and UV stability.
This high-performance surface supports Karta’s suitability for heavy commercial use, achieving the highest commercial durability classification for resilient flooring applications. Yet despite this strength, the finish maintains a refined and understated appearance rather than feeling industrial or over-engineered.
Karta floors are durable because they are intelligently designed.
Our specialist topcoat forms part of a flooring system designed without reliance on PVC-heavy construction and petrochemical-led flooring design. The liquid coating technology used within the surface layer is PVC-free and developed with low-emission performance in mind.
This matters because the top layer is often where conventional resilient flooring systems lean most heavily into synthetic chemistry and highly processed coatings, ones that leach dangerous chemicals into the environment through daily use and then later, once they’re discarded in landfill.
Karta is different from the very start.

Changing Spaces, Consistent Performance
Interior spaces evolve constantly. Hospitality environments are refreshed, workplaces are reconfigured, retail concepts shift, and homes adapt alongside the people living in them.
Karta Plated® was developed with this reality in mind.
Its durability supports years of daily use across residential and commercial interiors, while aligning with a more responsible view of material lifecycles. Long-lasting surfaces remain essential, but so does designing products with realistic future use, renewal, and recovery in mind.
A floor should support the lifespan of the space it serves without creating unnecessary environmental permanence long after that space has changed.
For us, that’s part of what responsible flooring looks like. That’s why all Karta floors come with a generous warranty as standard: 10 years for commercial installations, and 15 years for residential. Karta allows specifiers to choose flexibility over too-long-term commitments, while remaining responsible in their material choices.
The Full Picture
Now you know all about the final layer in the construction, but also the layer that connects every other innovation beneath it to the experience of everyday living. A surface engineered for durability, designed for realism, and developed with a more responsible future for flooring in mind.
